Site Analysis

WELLINGTON SCRAP METALS LIMITED

METAL RECYLING

The main materials of the space at 25 College Street include: Concrete, brick, corrugated iron, metal, wood, plastic and wire netting.

This all works together to form the buildings structure. Concrete floor, brick and concrete walls, then topped off buy a collaboration of metal beams and wood, toped by plastic (allowing light) and wire netting on top. This building appears to be structurally strong by having a solid grounding.

The building has been ticked off by Wellington City Council as an earthquake safe building, as not listed in the Earthquake prone buildings (13/07/15).

Surrounding the building is a large apartment building, shops and cafés. These include Goodness, which is a carefully curated collection of designer clothing retail store, Room 99 an interior design shop selling New Zealand made furniture and accessories from here and around the globe, then Osteopathy - an osteopath located on Collage Street, Moore Wilsons a higher quality end supermarket, and Caffe L'affare a highly sought after café to try out. These retail spaces are either a one off shop or one of a couple over the North Island of New Zealand.

The two boutiques, Goodness and Room 99, really show off what New Zealand has to offer as designers and creative people. This is something I want to carry on, into the space at 25 College Street.

What stood out to me from this extract was that Wellington is the 'place of the possible' - irriterating to me that this space to design could really be something different, something that is not seen in an everyday retail shop or experience. I want to design a space where shopping becomes an experience.
